I teach special education at an inner city school in Indiana. I work with students with Autism, Mild Mental Handicaps and Emotional Difficulties in grades Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd. Working with students with these needs takes creativity and a lot of work. In the past, I have used visual schedules to help my students with Autism prepare for transitions and changes in their school day. Each student had a picture schedule of their day placed on their desks with Velcro. For example, if the student had art class that day, a picture of the art teacher would be placed on the student's desk at the time that art class would occur. There would be a picture of the student eating lunch. That would fall into the time slot for lunch. Each morning, I would adjust the schedule to fit the student's day before the student arrived into the classroom. This year, my digital camera was dropped and stopped working. The cost to repair it was more than I could afford. I am requesting a new digital camera that would use the same battery and SD Memory Card that I already have from my previous camera. I used my camera for many different purposes. Students with Autism also have difficulty expressing their emotions. In past years, I have used the digital camera to take pictures of these students showing their different emotions. The students then use the picture to show an adult what they are feeling. This has worked well with some of my students. It helps me know how to help them at that moment. If the student expresses that they are mad at something, the picture would allow me to step in and help the situation. A digital camera could be used for many other purposes as well- students working hard on an assignment, special projects, class performances, field trips, and so on. Having a digital camera in my classroom would greatly improve the school day for my students with special needs.
