Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our world is changing at light speed, and unfortunately, most of our students are still moving at a snail's pace. Students need to be aware of the ways they are affected by the complicated political, economic, and technological shifts that happen every day.
Our school, the Houston Academy for International Studies, is determined to prepare students for this fast-paced, increasingly "small" world. We serve typical Houston students, and they are admitted to our school through a lottery system, which results in a great deal of racial and academic diversity. Our mission is to create "global citizens," and we infuse all academic classes with information about international cultures and political systems. We also try to provide as many authentic international experiences for our students as we can--many of them have never left the Houston area, much less the United States.
Model United Nations is a program that gives students the research, analysis, and writing skills they will need to be informed and active citizens of this changing world. Students spend weeks or months deeply researching one country and learning about that nation's stances on current world issues. Then, at large, multi-school simulations, these students act as their country's representative at a meeting for one of the UN's institutions, debating and negotiating their way to a resolution that all parties can agree on.
Last year, 20 of our students participated in Model UN as a club, but this year we've added it as an elective class. Our students are incredibly motivated and enthusiastic, but unfortunately we do not have a course textbook. In addition, since our school is only in its second year, we do not have a school library.
To fill this void in materials, I have provided students with whatever copies of materials I could get my hands on, but nothing takes the place of real, live books. I'd like to obtain a classroom set of Thomas Friedman's "The World is Flat," a comprehensive but accessible account of the causes and effects of globalization. I hope that this book will provide fruitful discussion and add fuel to the fire of my students' hunger for knowledge.
