Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an elementary school science teacher. During the week I see 450 students, ranging in grades 1 through 6.

I begin each science lesson with my 1st and 2nd graders on the carpet. In primary grades a rug space serves as a learning place that also helps foster a sense of community within the classroom. As a science teacher who was originally trained to be an elementary school teacher I understand the importance of a community learning spot and how valuable it is as an instructional tool. That is why all my other students, in 3rd through 6th grade, have met on the carpet at one time or another as well. I am currently using a carpet remnant to serve as the meeting spot for my primary students. It is very ratty along the edges and not necessarily meant for use by elementary school-age children. I frequently ask students to "give the carpet a haircut" to trim away all the bits of it that are falling off.

Funding this request will bring a brand new carpet to the science room at Graham Elementary School. The carpet you are helping to purchase is a brightly colored, rectangular carpet that has roomy square spots for the children to sit on. The carpet is rugged and made out of soil-resistant nylon.

Funding this project will provide a clean and safe community space for my students to learn science. By funding this project you are helping to create a more positive learning environment for all the students at my school, especially the 1st and 2nd graders who will use the carpet every single time they come to the science room.
