"Please help me inspire a love of reading in my students! I teach English to a wonderful group of 9th-12th graders in the Mississippi Delta. Most of my students receive free lunch, and certain school resources can be hard to come by.
Most of the classroom sets of books at our school are far too dry or advanced for my students. What's more, they can't really relate to characters in books like Ethan Frome or Wuthering Heights. They love to read when the material is aimed at their level, and involves people and events that interest them!
I would love to read "The Watsons go to Birmingham - 1963" with my students. Winner of a Newbery Honor and a Coretta Scott King Award, this book tells the story of Kenny Watson, who is traveling with his family to Birmingham, AL. The story "blends the fictional account of an African American family with the factual events of the violent summer of 1963", bringing history into our classroom. The story is not only a coming-of-age novel, but it also touches on the lasting effects of hate and ignorance, and the importance of family.
Your support would ensure that my students will get engaged in reading in my classroom -- and that classes for years to come can take advantage of these books!
My students need a classroom set of the book "The Watsons Go To Birmingham- 1963".
The cost of this proposal is $281, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Ruth, Clint, Melissa and Amy,
Thank you so much for funding my project!
I can't wait to read this book with my students -- I have heard nothing but stellar reviews about its ability to connect with students. My guess is that we will read it first thing when we get back from Winter break. I plan to tie-in lots of history lessons alongside the daily readings.
I feel honored that you chose to fund my classroom - know that there are a whole group of teenagers in the Mississippi Delta who will enjoy coming to class each day and, perhaps, will begin to love reading because of your generosity.
Once again, Thank you!
