Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the proud teacher of 22 adorable, smart, and inspiring 2nd graders. My students are very diverse: Puerto Rican, Dominican, Chinese, Bengali, and African. I teach at a Title I (low-income) school in Alphabet City. Many of my students have never been outside the 10 blocks surrounding their neighborhood. They have not been exposed to many cultural activities. My students and I have been discussing New York and Broadway. In Social Studies, we spend the year looking into our community to see what it consists of. We learn about the different jobs and services that support us. In addition, in the Spring, my scholars will be doing a New York research project. Each student will be given a postcard showing one landmark or highlight of New York. The children spend the month researching it. Then we take field trips to each landmark to see it first hand and the expert child is our tour guide. Broadway is always one of the sights. We get to see it from standing in the middle of Times Square, but not actually feel the excitement of it. I would love nothing more than more my students to be able to experience Time Square and Broadway first hand. To have the feelings of see all the lights, costumes, and beautiful acting would be a dream come true for my students. This grant would allow my 22 students to be mesmerized by The Little Mermaid. We would spend the month prior getting to know the script and reading parts of it for shared reading in class. After viewing the play, we would discuss the props, costumes, and music. In writing, we would create small scripts. As a final project, we will work with the after-school program in our school to perform the skits for the school. My students would be able to feel proud as they learn to project their voice and perform in their own Broadway play! Please make this dream come true.
