Grades 3-5

I am new to 3rd grade, as I taught 4th and 5th grades in the past few years. Because I have seen negative behaviors manifest in the intermediate grades, I want to introduce quality sociocultural literature to my 3rd graders that will hopefully broaden their outlook on people who are different from themselves. Literature, and kids connecting to characters, can be a powerful tool to open their minds and learn how to be more accepting individuals.

Just as with kids anywhere in the world, they know only of the world in which they live. As a teacher, I feel obligated to unfold the stories of others- people who look different from my students and myself, people who have cultures different from my students and myself, people who have experiences different from my students and myself. Personally, travel would be the best way to immerse one's self in another culture- but meeting characters in a story can sometimes be just as intense and memorable. Help my students connect with outside of our area.

My wish list is a compilation of texts that are easily read by 3rd grade students. They are highly appropriate to teach with in the themes of self-esteem, friendship, acceptance, community, as well as in the subject of Social Studies. The literature will be used to highlight ideas that we may learn in 3rd grade, like communities. They will also be used to spark discussions during our Morning Meetings, or used as Read-Alouds to quiet their minds after a class disruption. The resources that I wish for my students will ultimately help bring a strong sense of self and a sense of acceptance towards others.

This project is one which I feel passionate about because I not only am supposed to teach academics to my students, but also teach them how to be kind to one another. There's just not one book that can do that. Please help me to illustrate to my students that the world that they dream to be in can come true.
