My project needs 40 multicultural holiday books to help celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Day of the Dead, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Juneteenth, the Chinese New Year, and Valentines Day.
Holidays can be an exciting time for everyone and my class wants to learn more about the many diverse holidays people celebrate!
I work in a classroom with special education and regular education students, so we have a variety of reading skills. Many of my students read below their grade level. While some of them have grasped the basics of reading, they lack the self confidence and motivation to read.
In our school district, individual classroom libraries are financed by the teachers. While I have a few holiday books in my class library, they may not be on a students reading level. A lot of my holiday books are very old and the pictures and text are out of date. I have bought a few books for the library, but with the high poverty rate in my class, I am more likely to spend extra money on basic school supplies for the children and/or clothing. I do make use of the public library but it would be so wonderful to have access to these books in our own class all year long.
Learning about this topic is part of our social studies curriculum, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for children to explore a fun and motivational topic that talks about different cultures and diversity. I have asked for several quality hardcover books so that I can read them aloud and have the class practice their listening comprehension skills.
These books would also be used as springboards to help us talk about the different cultures we come from and how we all can come together to celebrate! We will use these books to teach, as well as to provide books at age appropriate reading levels for independent reading time. These books will also be used for years to come by other students in my class.
