Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help make my students messy- with paint and clay to activate their naturally creative spirits! I am a 1st grade classroom teacher in a Dual Language classroom. I teach my students in English, and they are taught by another teacher in Spanish. We are located in a very high needs school in Washington Heights, Manhattan, in New York City. About 98% of our students qualify for the free lunch program. Our school is very overcrowded, and as a result, the arts supplies are quite low.I love my school, but I am saddened by the lack of "non-necessary supplies" such as paint, crayons, and other creative arts materials. What little is available in the school is scooped up instantly, leaving the teachers to reach into their own pockets and spend countless dollars funding art supplies. As the city, and the nation, push for a school day dominated with cold, hard learning of English language arts and mathematics, the wonderful, vital, and necessary subjects such as art and music are lowered in priority. It is unfortunate that many school children are not taught in creative arts, or allowed any artistic expression in school, simply because "it is not formally tested." In my community, children's artistic education is not supplemented with after-school arts programs or summer academies, as this is a very low socio-economic neighborhood. Therefore, the only art comes from the school, but not nearly enough to inspire and activate the creative sense of our children. With your help, I will be able to bring back teaching of the creative arts. Paints visually excite and stimulate children, allowing them to freely express their creative minds. Modeling clay helps develop gross and fine motor control as students use their hands and muscles to sculpt a masterpiece. Doing creative arts projects can be a wonderful stress reliever students, and sometimes a student can express him or herself more through art than with words. Allowing a student to dapple in the creative arts can help identify, encourage, and intertwine the various backgrounds and cultures in the classroom. You can make it possible for my students to develop their creative and artistic education. Most importantly, your help can make sure the creative arts are not ignored. Please, my students have millions of creative ideas, they only need the supplies to get started. Thank you.
