My students need exciting art materials! I want them to explore sculpting with clay, dying fabric, using oil pastels, embroidery, and glue resist paintings on fabric.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are tired of the same old uninspiring materials. No more crayons! They are begging for materials that they have never used before. They are dreaming up projects that involve clay, fabric, paint, and string. Try and remember the excitement of trying something new for the first time.
All too often students feel unattached to their work.
They complete assignments for their teacher not for themselves. They are uninspired, disengaged, and rarely wowed; because of this many students lack a true interest in learning. My students live in Harlem, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in New York City. Due to lack of funds, my students don't get to experience the amazing art materials that could truly ignite their passions. They can easily get turned away from art, simply because they are tired of the same old materials. By introducing them to new, fascinating materials my students will be inspired to create masterpieces.
My Project
With your help my students will be creating multiple amazing projects. They will be sculpting using clay, dying fabric, and making glue resist fabric paintings (similar to Javanese batiking). Their sculptures can serve as ornaments, paperweights, and traditional bowls and vases. The dyed fabric can be a decorated patch on their backpack, or an entire T-shirt. The glue resist fabric paintings could be a fashionable scarf, or a symbolic wall decoration. The possibilities are endless. They will be engaged and awed at using materials they have never even heard of. Help me open their eyes to a new world.
There is no better way to reach a student than to excite them and give them ownership over their own learning.
Please help my students explore the many vehicles of self-expression by giving them the tools and materials they need to engage in meaningful projects. How many people can get to say they have dyed the shirt they are wearing, sculpted the ornament in their home, and created the batik decorating their walls?
