Building Reading Skills

My project needs phonemic awareness manipulatives so that my students can increase their reading skills by engaging their kinetic senses for added learning.

I am a Special Education teacher in a Title One school. This means that about 45% of our families receive reduced or free lunch because of income levels. My school year is also year-round, due to the large number of students within the school boundaries. This year I am servicing Kindergarten, First, Second, and Sixth grade students. Three of my students have difficulty identifying the number of sounds in a simple word (phonemic awareness), such as the three sounds in the word 'dog.' Two of my students are English as a Second Language pupils with learning problems who can't give the English name of an object. They need to increase their everyday vocabulary in English. Half of my students still haven't mastered knowing the names and basic sounds of the alphabet. Traditional phonics instruction needs to be enhanced by including multi-sensory activities to increase their learning. Reading Rods (R) are linking blocks with letters on them that let students actually BUILD words. The student centers come with activity books, reading books, and teacher instruction manuals. The phonemic awareness kit includes blocks with pictures on them that students attach to blocks with the representative sounds in the names of the objects pictured. Students who need more kinetic activities to reinforce their learning gain deeper learning because they are using visual and auditory skills in conjunction with hands-on learning. English as a Second Language students also learn the English names of common objects while relating the sounds in the objects names to the letter representations, similar to the way American students gain phonemic understanding. I have a simple set of Reading Rods for Sentences (R), and my Sixth grade writing students enjoy using them. Phonemic Awareness Reading Rods (R) manipulatives will be fun for students to use, creating a great activity while learning phonemic awareness, the skill most basic to learning to read. The activities will provide sensory rich experiences that will increase my students' learning, in the disguise of playing with blocks, a basic childhood activity. Reading Rods(R) have research behind them that demonstrate how students' reading abilities increase with the rods' use. With your support and concern for the enriched learning experiences of my Special Education students, together you and I can help them. Knowing that people my students do not know have faith in my students' possibilities will help give my students the confidence that they can reach some of their goals. The advantage of the Reading Rods (R) is that they can be used over and over year after. With your help I can assist students for many years to come.
