Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a second grade regular education teacher. I teach all subjects (Reading, math, Science, Social Studies and Language). 97% of the students are on free lunch program. Most of my students do not have writing material, thus I have to continuously provide school supply (with my own money) for them. This makes it difficult for me to purchase science consumables for our science lessons. During science lessons, I find it difficult to maintain the students' interest due to lack of hands on activities/consumable materials. I have tried several activities to bring excitement during our science lesson; however, do to limited resources/materials and funds to purchase more consumable; science period are sometimes redundant. I know that I need to make science period an exciting subject in my class. Thus, in order to maintain their interest, I sometimes repeat experiments based on the materials on hand or those that I can afford on a daily bases, mostly household items. During the beginning of school, the students are very excited during science lessons, because we are conducting exciting experiments. However, as time goes on and we are out of material for our experiments, their interest level declines and the excitements I used to see before are gone. The materials that I am requesting on behalf of my students are: a class room Aquarium, for daily observation of an organism. A chemistry lab kit (classroom set), life science kit with sound and light activities, science kit for electrical and magnetic experiments and also a classroom lab kit for physical science. These classroom science kits will provide amble resources of activities and consumable, thus bringing back the excitements I once saw on my students during the beginning of the school year. This will equally erase the misconception some of my students now how about science being a boring subject. Please help me to bring back and keep the excitement and enthusiasm I saw in my students during the beginning of the school year. Thanks in anticipation.
