"I teach science in an inner-city high school. Most of my students express very little interest in recreational reading and do not see the relevance of scientific advancements in their lives.

During our studies of genetics, students expressed interest in some controversial applications of genetic technologies. I believe their interest in the topic has opened a door for me to introduce them to modern science fiction, specifically the book "Next" by Michael Crichton. I believe that this book will catch their interest and allow them an opportunity to discuss the application of the genetic technologies which they have recently learned about, as well as encourage skills necessary for reading comprehension and critical thinking.

If these books are made available to my students I believe that they will find that reading can be exciting and interesting. They will be discussing the impact of science fiction on society and thinking critically about the implications of scientific developments in our society. You could help these students find the value of reading and the relevance of scientific advancements in society.

My students need 35 copies of "Next" by Michael Crichton to study the impact of modern science fiction and current genetic science on society. The cost of this proposal is $439, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear ScienceBlogs, Kelli, DonorsChoose.org Team, Teacher Engagement Team and Anonymous Donors,
I am so pleased to see that others value this project as much as I do! I have already shared the good news with my students and they are looking forward to our reading and discussions. It is so nice to see them excited about getting a book. Hopefully this will be the opportunity they need to encourage them to read frequently and think critically about science in society. Thank you so much! We look forward to sharing our progress and experiences with you.

On Jan 30, 2008, Ms. C. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
