Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Hi! I am an eighth grade teacher at Northeast Middle School in Guilford County, North Carolina. I am in a science room, but the materials are either non-existent or very old and outdated. Our school does not receive a lot of money, and I would like to make sure that my students who come from many different backgrounds and abilities, get to experience a great eighth grade year in science! The curriculum we study is so exciting and includes geologic history, the hydrosphere, chemistry and microbiology, however, I need the resources to help me teach these subjects and I'm missing the basics right now. I've done my best to buy what I can afford for my classroom, but would love to have some real science equipment for my students to use. The materials I have requested for Putting the Why? in Science will help me with scientific inquiry all through the year. Students will have the opportunity to measure with graduated cylinders and beakers, observe pond water animals, explore chromotography and how different colors give out different wavelengthts of color and so much more. This is my fifth year teaching science and I continue to strive to provide "real-world" opportunities for my students so that they can continue to enjoy asking "Why?" You can help me support our future generation in their quest for scientific literacy. Thank you!
