Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education Mathematics teacher at Trenton Central High School. My students range from ninth to twelfth grade. The school is located in an urban setting and has over 2,000 students.
The students at my school are not engaging in the process of learning. I need a way to informally monitor my students to ensure their engagement. The whiteboards offer a simple solution to encourage the engagement of my students.
The materials that I need to complete my project are a classroom whiteboard, individual student whiteboards, and the dry erase pens needed to write on them.
Based on my research I have seen the impact that whiteboards can have on a classroom setting. The whiteboard allows the teacher to differentiate instruction by giving everyone the chance to participate and answer a question. Students who were reluctant to participate now can look around, see what others have put down for an answer and decide what they will put down.
My teaching philosophy revolves around the idea of creating understanding. This process takes place through student engagement and discussion. In order to be successful students will need to be able to communicate, problem solve, work collaboratively and present material. The whiteboard facilitates all of these key elements. The whiteboard shifts the focus from the teacher to the student and allows students to come up with their own solutions. It helps students to see that there can be more than one way to answer a question and that multiple representations of most answers exist.
Research has proven that classes that engage in presentation, reflection and discussion will retain much more information. Research has also proved that students will remember the strategies that they come up with not the ones that the teacher presents. Students have to build understanding through inquiry and discussion with classmates with the teacher providing the necessary supports to provide success.
