Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher in a kindergarten inclusion class. Our school is located in a very poor area where children are growing up way too fast. They do not have the chance to be children. Many of them end up being the caretakers for their younger brothers or sisters. This worries me! What happened to having fun as a child? My students this year have come to school lacking skills that should have been developed already. Most of my students have extreme gross and fine motor skills deficiencies. Obviously they did not experience activities such as puzzles, beading or lacing which may have strengthened these particular skills.
I feel that if given the chance, especially while they are still young, play dough is one way in which children can use their hands and strengthen some basic fine motor skills needed and at the same time have fun with it. It also would allow students to "model" the letter of the week out of their play dough. It is a fun way to not only learn, but is a great activity for students who are visual learners. On top of that, it allows the children to use their hands to be creative and at the same time, strengthen their gross and fine motor skills.
Some students are not very good at reading or writing, but are great at drawing or art. This would allow students to be expressive and creative and to demonstrate skills otherwise not seen. Please consider our proposal as I assure you, my students would benefit from it greatly!!!
