Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Where does a student go to learn anatomy, the connectivity of systems, lab skills, scientific processes and develop an acute interest in the sciences?.....Why, to the rats!
Our students live in a very low income area.
We are situated on an Indian reservation, but we are a public school. Our students are bright, curious and need stimulating, interesting science activities to keep them coming back for more and more science.
The students range from grades 6-8. Now is the time to grip their interest. Our demographic area has a lot of career opportunities in fisheries, forestry and restoration. While we are rural, there are colleges and trade schools near enough. Let's steer the students in a direction that is feasible.
Our students grow up immersed in hunting, fishing and gathering. Let's use those types of experiences, but connect them to science. The students can look at their lives a little more in depth and with an added dimension.
My Project
We are starting an afternoon science club. The club is for interested students that want to advance their science knowledge. The focus of participants will not be by highest GPA, but by highest interest. Do to our lack of budget, these "different" types of fun learning are not easily available. The dream is that students will rotate through the club mini sessions and get to experience a number of unique science activities. More students will be able to rotate through, be included in activities otherwise unavailable to them, and pick up very valuable science concepts.
Middle school aged students love odd stuff, and dissecting rats is going to pull them in for some great learning!
This project will hook students by having the ability to do something unusual while learning advanced science skills.
Offering hands-on science activities will help students to comprehend major science concepts. If you are a poor reader, or writer, taking notes and pretending to read the text is not the most optimal way to embrace science curriculum. Science IS the most fun subject because of the opportunity to learn in a manner that addresses more than one way of learning.
