Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a new ESL teacher at a High School, which serves a diverse student population. Throughout the year, my ESL class, which consists of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, plans to read non-fiction news stories and books. Essential to this goal are readings that not only engage the interests of the class but also help develop strong reading and fluency skills. So far this year, I have used excerpts from Studs Terkel's book "Working", together with the film "Farmingville", to analyze the meaning of what it is to work and live in America. My students, who have immigrated from countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Mongolia, Jordan, Liberia, and Bosnia, have been captivated by this discussion and wish to read more about other cultures. My search for a reading that would motivate my students to think critically about these issues has led me to the book, "The Red Scarf Girl". I believe that the book, "Red Scarf Girl", will be an integral part of my curriculum for years to come, because it tells the story of a Chinese girl who struggles against both her overbearing parents and the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. Through this reading and discussion, I hope to not only empower each student to complete an English-language book, but also to further his or her understanding of our society. With your help, I can guide my students to achieve personal reading goals with a book that will challenge their opinions and deepen their sense of ownership in our school and community. I thank you for your time and consideration.
