Ms. K. from CA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Third Eye Technology

My project needs a digital microscope to enhance the learning of our special education students. They learn best by hands-on projects, and this will enable them to study and draw/diagram everything from crystal structures of minerals in Earth Science to living tissue for Life Science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach grades 6, 7, and 8 math and science in a self-contained Special Education classroom for students with learning disabilities. My middle school is a year-round school in downtown Los Angeles and this item will be shared between 3-4 teachers to benefit a total of approximately 100 students. One of the difficulties we face is the lack of access to the technological resources at our school. The larger general education classrooms pretty much dominate these resources, and we are left out, seldom having access to equipment. The problem is that our students learn best when they can see what they are learning and get their hands on it. My request is focused on taking advantage of our students' enthusiasm for using technology. They love learning to use it, and it gives them confidence when they can use it. I want to use this microscope to enhance lessons throughout the year. Instead of looking at diagrams and pictures from a book, my students will learn by making their own illustrations from the real things. They can compare soil samples, leaf structure, fungus growth and crystal formations of different minerals. They can examine samples of their hair to determine differences, and get the lowdown on fingerprints. One of the things that holds back students with disabilities from success is the fear of taking risks. The donor who provides this item will be contributing to the self-confidence of my students, thereby boosting their willingness to take risks and try harder. I work hard to empower my students by helping them understand first, what their disability is, and second, what they can do to compensate for it. It's exciting work and this is one way you can be part of it.
