Hooray! This project is fully funded

To better understand DNA technology students must be introduced to new technology. This project will allow student to understand that DNA is found in all living organisms. They will be able to understand gel electrophoresis and, it will help to prepare students for the State Biology Exam. I currently teach Biology I, Human Anatomy and Earth Science at H. W. Byers High School. Byers is a rural k-12 Title I school. Approximately 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Because we are a rural school, we do not have the community support, equipment or supplies that larger school have. For this project the students will extract DNA from human cheek cells and different types of fruit. This project will help students with the concept that all living things have DNA. After extracting the DNA, the students will use restriction enzymes to cut the DNA and then separate the fragments using gel electrophoresis. For this project I will need a DNA extraction kit, Agerose gel, Buffer solution and restriction enzymes. Knowledge of DNA technology is a requirements for Biology. This project will allow students to experience Gel Electrophoresis first-hand and help them to better understand how DNA can be used in solving criminal cases, and paternity cases. Students will also be able to see that all living organisms have DNA, even the fruit they eat.
