Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach (all subjects) second grade in a small inner city Title 1 school, where 91% of the students participate in the free lunch program and 49% are English as a Second Language learners. Since our school is small, so is the budget that the school gets. It has been a challenge to introduce video technology to my class because of our limited resources.
The students would write narratives using the "themes" from our reading program for example poetry, autobiographies, animal camouflage and fossils. Next, the children take still images and create a movie. Also, they would use the internet to collect images or bring their own images to add to their movie. Finally, they would record and edit their movie. These completed movies would be presented to their parents. I truly believe even the most reluctant reader and writer would get excited about creating something they can call their own. This project would build their confidence as writers, improve their reading fluency and read in a manner approximating natural speech. I would like to purchase a digital camera and a multifunction printer to complete the project.
Please consider donating money for the digital camera and multifunction printer. I can assure you with the investment you make, all the students in my class will be active participants in using this technology to help develop their oral language and reading skills. Plus it will help these students to be savvy users of technology.
