"Something my students are struggling with in my class is the ability to resist violence. In sixth grade, many of them think fighting or using insults is a way to handle adversity.

I would like to teach community through photography and social commentary. Students in my class will partner up, photograph and interview each other and present their findings through a photography exhibition.

Also, in an effort to capture the larger community, students will complete a social commentary project on their neighborhood, by photographing scenes from their daily life and writing about them.

My students are at a crucial age where they can learn the importance of sticking together. Many are dangerously close to becoming permanent adversaries of children who live very close by, which is causing problems now, and will continue to cause problems in the future.

In addition to this photography project, I am planning a field trip to the New York City Tolerance Museum, in an effort to teach them to respect differences and perhaps learn the importance of agreeing to disagree without the inclusion of violence.

I am requesting 2 digital cameras, 2 cases and 2 memory cards for the children to use in order to complete the photography portion of the assignment, as well as to capture the field trips and creation of the projects. After conducting research on cameras, I selected a "student-friendly" camera that should be manageable for students to master, while also taking high-quality, exhibition-ready portraits.

I have a lot of experience with photography and have had success with similar projects at my previous school and look forward to testing the healing power of art and teamwork in my classroom.

My project needs 2 digital cameras, 2 camera cases and 2 memory cards. The cost of this proposal is $491, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Tom, Shari, Carey, Rich, Image Serenity Photography, Andrea, Kelle Walsh, David, Cyleste, Nicole and Linda,
Thank you so much to contributing to my classroom community building project! We are all very excited to start working toward our class collaborative photography and essay exhibit.

I have one camera in the classroom already, and when students are working in teams to photograph each other, they truly do "forget" the fact that they have been assigned to their partner because they could not get along with him or her at some point this year. It's amazing how engaged students can become when working with technology that is new, exciting and interesting to them.

I am looking forward to having two more cameras so students can work in small groups to document their neighborhood. I am hoping the theme of "community" in our classroom will help to create a more pleasant one there, as well as inspire kids to contribute toward making their larger community more pleasant now, and in their future.

Thank you again for all of your support. I hope you realize that you helped make a huge difference for us!

Sincerely,
Nicole
