Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 1st grade at an Elementary School made up primarily of low income students. 80% of the students are on a free or reduced lunch program. We focus greatly on reading and writing in the first grade. We gather at our carpet area to read and discuss many books. The current easel we have is in very bad shape. It no longer can erase the dry erase marker, the lower shelf continues to fall off, and the big book holder will not support the big books anymore. We are in desperate need of a new easel to help support our learning. We read a big book every day using this easel to support the book so the entire class can read it together as well as use the dry erase board to write sentences and teach mini lessons related to reading and writing. The new easel would help to create an area where students can come up to the front of the class and share with the reading of big books, as well as practice writing words and sentences. The particular easel we selected also has hooks to hold chart tablets and this would be very helpful when we have students come up to the board to share their writing. We also have a morning message everyday and this is an excellent area for us to post it. You can help my class gain the full experience of our shared reading and shared writing lessons with a fully functional writing easel center.
