Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Special Education students have NO math books and desperately need them. I teach a 6th grade self-contained class of Special Education students who are mentally disabled.

My students have much difficulty learning and retaining skills. They are expected to learn grade level material yet function 2-4 grade levels below this. They face many obstacles such as learning to not having the correct materials to learn with. The money that my class receives every year is nowhere near the expense of the math textbooks that my students need.

My class has been using Saxon Math for several years now without student text books. They really need them to be able to see the problems and the information given to learn the skills. The students have been very successful using this program because it provides daily review that they need in order to retain skills. They would be more successful with the information right in front of them every day. The books and the information in the books would help reinforce the lesson provided by me. No student should have to learn without a textbook. Our school system uses only the math books provided for regular education students. My students have difficulty with the book because there is not a daily review that helps them to retain the skills all through the year. Saxon Math provides this; therefore, they are making tremendous progress and are passing the alternate assessment mandated by the state. A textbook would be a very valuable asset to my students.

Your help with this proposal will greatly help my students learn all the different math skills. By having all the information in front of them will provide more visual learning. They will be able to see how certain math problems are solved other than seeing me show them on the overhead. It would greatly reinforce my teaching and I fully believe that it would greatly enable the students to be more successful.
