I teach first grade in a low income school. Many students in our school are English as a Second Language (ESL). We also have many struggling readers.
Many years ago, our school purchased leveled books for our children to read. Leveled books are books that are rated from levels 1-20 based on vocabulary and sight words. The students read these books during Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time and also, bring the books home in zip-lock baggies to read at home.
The problem is that these books are worn and torn. I am constantly trying to repair what books can be salvaged, but many books have to be thrown away.
We are in desperate need of new low level books for our emergent (beginning) readers, our ESL readers, and our struggling readers. Our school library does not have many low level books and our school system has adopted a phonics based reading program which leaves the students without books they can read independently.
If this proposal is funded, the students will have easy readers in their hands on a daily basis, either for DEAR time or when they finish their work early. They also will be able to take these books home and practice reading with their parents.
Thank you for your consideration.
