This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am the Science and Aeronautics teacher for the school. Each class from Kindergarten to 5th grade comes to my class once a week.
Our North Carolina school is a title 1 school with about an 80% free and reduced lunch population. The ethnic make up is about 90% African American, 8% Hispanic and 2% Caucasian.
Weather is something no one can do anything about, but much can be learned from observing and predicting it. Weather affects us all to varying degrees, so it is good to learn as much as we can as early as possible. Certainly, businesses connected with agriculture are very concerned about it, but every municipality and every person from the smallest community to the largest cities in the world are always affected by it, for better or worse.
In this time of changing weather patterns and the very real possibility of a non-reversible trend of global warming, students need to know all they can about the weather to be able to offer a future of hope.
This is a professional grade weather station that will make available all weather related data at the touch of a button. Barometric readings, humidity, precipitation and wind, among other data will be all be at every student's finger tips through the wireless remote sensor that will be in the class room. I will use it to not only record the weather, but to help students understand how to predict and plan for long term changes in weather patterns. We will research weather history for the area and start to create our own weather history which will be compiled for the school for future students to study.
The school is 52 years old and is scheduled for replacement. The new school will be constructed next to the old one starting this fall and we will move into our new school in August, 2008.
