I teach Prekindergarten in an economically disadvantaged area. Many students are in public or transitional housing. Many students are recent immigrants to the United States.

Studies have proven that students from economically disadvantaged areas have a limited vocabulary. They simply do not know as many words as children who come from advantaged areas. Some of my students are immigrants and need to be immersed in the English language.

Studies have also proven that dramatic play helps children increase their vocabulary. The career costumes will allow my students to dress-up and through dramatic play pretend that they are police officers, nurses, chefs, etc. Through Teacher scaffolding (interaction), the children will increase their vocabulary. We will talk about the tools each career uses to perform its duties. We will talk about the role of the policeman and the firefighter in the community, and even set some goals for the future (When I grow up, I want to be...).

You will make it possible for my students to increase the number of words they can use. They will learn to talk and interact with their peers.
