Mrs. B. Peter's Elementary School
Broken Arrow, OK Grades 3-5

I am a 5th grade Language Arts teacher in our suburban elementary school. The majority of our student population comes from middle to lower income families with both parents who work very hard to make ends meet. Our students are culturally diverse and include a large population of Native American students. We try very hard to include all of these cultures in our curriculum. Textbooks are wonderful tools for the classroom. Trade books of fiction and nonfiction are also a great way to teach language arts skills. These are provided by our school and used each day. But they are not the only written source that an elementary student should be exposed to and explore in depth. The current event magazine Time for Kids is an excellent resource that I would like to provide for my students. Using a publication like Time for Kids will help develop language skills as students read nonfiction articles for comprehension and summarization. Students will improve their oral language skills by discussing and debating article contents. The magazine articles will be a stepping off place to generate interest for further research in other mediums. The editorials and reader opinions will expose students to persuasive writing techniques. The study and analysis of magazine writing will help students refine their own writing skills and help them to present their thoughts and opinions in a concise and articulate manner. By providing exposure to a current events publication I hope to increase my student’s awareness of the world around them. I hope to provide them a strong foundation of skills they will need as adults to analyze and comprehend all forms of media they will be exposed each and every day. My project will need subscriptions to 2 class sets of the publication Time for Kids, Grades 4-6. We will also need 2 magazine racks to store and preserve the condition of the magazines in the classroom.
