Hooking today's teen into an appreciation of American history can best be done with an INVITATION TO INVESTIGATION. My multi-leveled seventh grade students are invited to "live history" from post-Civil War westward expansion to the end of the 20th century.

In teaching such "living history" topics as the Industrial Revolution, Immigration, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression and the War Years, making the history "real" for my students is the ultimate goal. It is so important for them to SEE that history goes miles beyond a textbook or a worksheet. I want them to be able to BELIEVE the stories of the people who have made our nation what it is today. What a shame it is when a V-mail letter from my Uncle Donald in 1944 is too fragile or the Spanish-American war photograph of my husband's great-grandfather is too brittle to be handled by 180 students!

Yet modern technology provides a way for me to share these precious pieces of American history...if only the school budget could afford it! The ELMO TEACHER'S TOOL DOCUMENT CAMERA would allow me to project that ration stamp booklet, a cherished family tree page or a presidential campaign button to full classroom screen-size so that SEEING would truly become BELIEVING.

Think back to your days in American history classes. Did you just read a textbook and take notes? Did your teacher ever bring in pieces of history? If he or she did, were you able to actually see the objects? Were you ever hooked on history? My goal is to hook my students' into a love for and appreciation of the objects and images that are a part of America's historical record. Your help toward making that goal a reality would be immensely appreciated. Remember...SEEING IS BELIEVING!
