Calculator Calamity! We Need Your Help! I teach 7th and 8th grade mathematics in a rural school district. The socio-economic status of the majority of my students is very low. This combined with the fact that a very high percentage of my students come from broken homes (divorce, death of a parent, abandonment,…) makes for a very high-needs group of students.

Our state standards have changed dramatically over the past few years. The curriculum has become much more demanding making it more difficult for my students to be successful in school and graduate. The state requires that students know how to use a scientific calculator for the state assessments in the spring. My calamity is that most of my students cannot afford a calculator. Many of my students wear the same shirt everyday because they can’t afford to buy new clothes, let alone find transportation to get to a store to buy a new calculator.

I am asking for a set of 10 Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS calculators for my students to use during class and for their homework. The students that do have calculators all use this brand and model since that is pretty much the only calculator that is sold in our town. I am also asking for an overhead calculator that emulates the TI-30X IIS. Having an overhead calculator is crucial for my students’ understanding of how to use their calculators. I currently have a TI-30X IIS poster that I use to point to what buttons the students need to find and what those buttons do. This doesn’t mean much when they can’t see what the functions do. With a calculator for each student and one that I can model on the overhead with them, my students will have the access to and build confidence with the technology that our classrooms these days require.

You will make it possible for my students to become active learners in today’s technologically advanced classrooms. You will allow my students to become confident with, rather than intimidated by, technology. You will be giving my disadvantaged students the tools they need to become successful in my classroom and beyond.
