Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Clear the table please. We need all the space we can get. Please be careful not to wrinkle and crinkle your beautiful work. Okay, great job. Now we can work together in large group activities. Red and blue table you are the Indians, purple and yellow table you are the Pilgrims; White and orange table you will be the ship builders. O kay, now write your letters back home to England. Indians remember you do not write with words you use symbols. Ship builder, we need bigger and better ships because lots of people will be coming to the new colonies. Let's get ourselves organized and spread the word about The First Thanksgiving!" Our next project, messy but fun, is to visit the Mexican culture and make pottery for Valentines Day gifts. Very few of the children in my first grade EIP (early intervention program)class have the opportunity to explore art outside of school. These children almost all from lower social-economic homes lack the experiences that other children have. E ven though many of them are of Hispanic origins they have not the funds at home to explore various art media. Art in the classroom, not just with the art teacher, is one of strategies used to help the children with their writing compositions. My first grade children are often involved in small and large group collaborative activities. Space for large scale projects are minimized since our tables have all our learning needs on them. Keeping all their materials neat and organized is a daily task, which would be omitted if they had their own little pocket chair organizer to keep their work and supplies neat and near. Organization and structure for my first grade group of children is the foundation in which learning builds upon. The table is one of their spaces to explore, discover and, share knowledge. Chair storage organizers will aid us each and every day! From the smiles upon their faces and the sparkle in their eyes, thank you.
