hen English is the second language, a picture can be worth more than a thousand words. I teach 4th grade in a school that is becoming more and more diverse. Our second language learner population is growing at a rapid rate. I teach my own class and also teach science to all of the fourth graders in our school.

I have fifty-five aspiring scientists eager to learn. In our room we believe in small group hands-on experiments. The problem is that when I demonstrate an experiment they are going to perform, or try to show a result, often times students can't see it.

Having a document camera will allow all of the students to see and understand what they are supposed to be learning. I will be able to show tiny organism, flower parts, blood cells, and countless other items that would take the whole class period to pass around. Those children that struggle with English will be able to see what I am talking about and make a stronger connection. Students will have more time work in their small group and less time waiting.

This age group of students is wonderful to work with because they are so enthusiastic about learning. Science is an area that we desperately need to encourage our young people to embrace. By funding this proposal, you will make these students realize that science is important and exciting. Thank you for considering and funding this proposal.
