Shuffling Towards Fluency Without a Shuffleboard

Students who lack reading skills = Students who lack interest in reading. My job is to integrate technology with classroom learning for grades K-5. My focus areas are geared towards areas of concern and reading fluency is our #1 area of concern with 5th graders.

I need a "hook" to help my struggling 5th graders work on reading fluency. The "hook" is an iPod Shuffle. Students love these gadgets and would do just about anything to be able to use them at school. With so many gadgets like these even banned in schools, how excited would kids get if you handed them an iPod shuffle and said, "Here, go read."? Anytime students see my personal iPod or even a cell phone by chance, it's all they can do to keep their hands off of it. They long to tell me a story about how their mom, cousin, sister, step-dad has one. The students know how to use these gadgets but schools don't typically buy into these newer technologies until someone else does. I want to be that 'someone else'.

The excitement of a shiny new iPod shuffle can bring interest and excitement to reading for students. Giving each student time at a computer each day to practice reading is not always possible in classrooms, but purchasing a handful of iPod Shuffles for a classroom is! Reading passages can be downloaded to the iPod Shuffles for students to listen to and practice reading out loud with. Students need to hear how a passage should be read and then given the opportunity to model themselves after the example. Students can work individually with the Shuffle or in small groups when they hook the Shuffle up to computer speakers. Different learning modalities are addressed with this project. Visual learners can see the passage on paper in front of them. Tactile learners can hold and manipulate the iPod. Kinesthetic learners can enjoy the freedom of being wireless in a group on the floor practicing their reading fluency with the help of their iPod Shuffle. Finally, auditory learners can hear the iPod Shuffle belt out reading passages for them to model themselves after.

Your help on this endeavor will give my students the excitement they need in order to make reading something they are interested in and excited about. What kinds of things did you get excited about when you were in 5th grade? Do you remember the last time you were really 'pumped' to go do something you had never really wanted to do in the first place? With your help, I can give my students that feeling with a simple iPod Shuffle. Thanks for your consideration!
