Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in a Title One School. The schools population is over 2,000 students K-5. A majority of the population is on free or reduced lunch. Most of the students are English Language Learners whose families are from a variety of countries outside of the United States. Specifically in my class, 70% of my students are English Language Learners.

My students have many obstacles in front of them. They are learning a new language with very limited resources. In a school as large as ours there are not enough books with CDs to help the students grow in there language and comprehension. My students love to hear the stories that they are reading which gives them a sense of voice when the read aloud or to themselves.

For this project, I need headphones and books on CD at different levels. The reason the levels are so important is because not all of my students are in the same place in their reading ability. I want these books on CD to facilitate the growth of vocabulary, word identification, fluency and comprehension for all of my students. The picture books will be helpful to build a base with my beginning readers who still need the picture to guide in the comprehension of the text. The transitional books will catch the students who are growing in their ability to read but need assistance from time to time with pictures to understand a more difficult vocabulary. The chapter books will be wonderful for my students who want to enjoy them, but are not quite ready to read them on their own. Chapter books are huge when a student gets to the third grade and it breaks my heart when they want to read it so bad, but don’t quite have the ability. These chapter books on CD will boost their confidence and show them that soon they will be ready to read them on their own!

Your help with this project will not only assist my students in increasing their vocabulary, fluency and comprehension which are extremely important, but it will make a world of difference in their confidence to read and explore books that they think they cannot accomplish on their own. I would love for my students to know that there are bright futures ahead of them and if their confidence can be built up now; there is no limit to what they can do in the future. So please help my kids “Listen and Learn!”
