Words and language define experience. The best resource available for students to learn more about words is the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). I teach high school English, and I love words. One of my goals each year is to help students love words too. It is also my goal to help students understand the power and meaning of words. Students already read and write extensively. My next step is to introduce students to the study of words themselves. The OED, the Oxford Latin Dictionary, and the supplemental books in this proposal will open up the world of words to my students. Students will study etymology, usage, and historical changes of words and language. At the same time students will increase their vocabularies and spend some quality time with their hands on real books (as opposed to online sources). Students will also learn about the making of the Oxford dictionaries. Will you help us out?
