No Money For Memories

My students need a high quality digital camera to take the 750 student pictures we take for our school yearbook that would help our students' memories last forever with the.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

There is money for books, there is money for testing, but there is no money for memories. The school I teach at is impoverished and under performing. As a Language Arts teacher I am able to get various materials to help minimize the "performance gap" in testing scores, but as the advisor of the Associated Student Body (ASB), a class that did not exist at our school until I designed it, I must beg, borrow and steal to get anything to support my students. According to our district, the class simply "isn’t important" to student achievement. This non-important class contributes time to the local community, puts on several academic and non-academic events throughout the school year, and, for the last four years, has designs and published a school wide yearbook. The ASB exists because we decided that student memories are important and increased student moral will, in-fact, improve academic achievement.

1996 was the last year our school had a yearbook before The ASB class was created. It was because of a group of dedicated students that I created the ASB course to improve student moral, and give the students some memorable experience beyond academics and a yearbook to hold those memories. In 2004 our first yearbook was published. Even though this was a great accomplishment, we had lots of more work to do. Each year since then, the students' pride in our school has improved and our yearbook has gotten better. It’s wonderful to hear students excited about school events and, curiously, our test scores have improved too. We now take every student picture in the book our self because the district will not pay for a professional photographer as the expense "isn’t justified to improve academic performance." We take these pictures (750 this year), and all of the other pictures too, with borrowed digital cameras. The quality and speed of these cameras vary, and we burn through AA batteries like crazy. Portraits from $100 cameras are a challenge, and we have killed more than one of these in the process, but the district still won't help us buy one nice camera because there is no money for memories.

We are asking for one nice, speedy, rechargeable-battery, professional camera to take yearbook pictures with. We have selected a camera carefully and have sought professional advice as to which one would work best for us for the least possible cost.

ASB students give to the local community, they empower students with school pride and make coming to school fun. They create, layout and publish a first class yearbook with third class resources. Please help us prove to our school district that memories count.
