Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You cannot study science without DOING science. My students are expected to understand the life cycle of bacteria. There is no better way for them to attain this understanding than to observe these processes happening. My students need laboratory equipment to study bacteria in an experiment.

My students are keen on doing hands on science.

They thrive in investigating problems with real-life implications. They are a diverse group; representing half a dozen nationalities and many are first or second generation immigrants. We are a public school serving students from kindergarten through 8th grade. As we are a community school, many of my students have one or more family members who also attend our school.

My Project

My students will be investigating where bacteria are present in the school. They will also be investigating the effects of temperature on reproductive rate of bacterial culture. Though we could learn about these two topics by reading selections from various text books, actually collecting, culturing, and observing these bacteria will give my students a much deeper and richer understanding of the content. In addition it will give them experience with real life science procedures, such as making hypotheses, collecting samples, recording data, and making careful observations.

The 21st century American citizen needs more than basic proficiency in reading, writing, and math.

We expect our students to be literate in science and technology. To meet this expectation my students need real and engaging scientific experiences. By allowing my students to conduct an investigation on the location of bacteria in a classroom setting and the rate of bacterial reproduction at different temperatures you will broaden their horizons and forever change the way they view their world.
