My Students

Budget cuts! My school was affected by budget cuts this year which has made a tremendous impact on the school. Instead of 50 kindergartners, we now have 90. I received basic supplies, but I do not have any science supplies or hands-on materials. Kindergartners need hands-on materials.

My students are curious, adventurous, and very creative.

Being 5 year olds, they love to explore and find out things for themselves. I work at a charter school on the westside of a city. The poverty level of the school is 93%. The children are eager to jump into the learning experiences. Because of budget cuts this year, our school had to enroll more students. An extra kindergarten class was created, however extra support materials, and manipulatives were not. The school is a great school yet, it was affected by the budget cuts

My Project

One of the questions that I ask my kindergarteners constantly is what does it feel, smell, look, and does it make any interesting sounds. Having hands-on equipment that can feel, smell, touch, and hear helps to open up their minds. Being actively involved is very important in learning. My students do not get the opportunity to go and discover insects or even spend a lot of time outside to see nature. Having these materials in the classroom will open their minds to more than what they actually see on any given day. They will be able to explore their learning environment with the magnifying glasses and slides. They will also see the life cycle of the butterfly and be able to actually see a caterpillar change into a butterfly.

I believe that they will also learn to love science and see the importance of science.
