Producing Passionate Promising Poets

My students need 10 copies of "Poetry Matters: Writing a Poem from the Inside Out" by Ralph Fletcher, 1-2 copies of 16 additional poetry collections, including works by Shel Silverstein, Langston Hughes and Robert Frost, a ream of copy paper and 41 composition books.

My students need to learn poetry and appreciate it. I am a third grade teacher who teaches Reading/Language Arts to 40 highly motivated students. Most of my students receive free lunch based on their parents financial status. This does not afford them the opportunity to purchase all of the books that they would enjoy reading.

They enjoy learning to read prose and poetry. I have a classroom library composed of prose. My students and I need to add poetry to our classroom library to make it complete. They have asked on several occasions about having poetry books in our classroom library.

I would like to add ten copies of the book "Poetry Matters" for small group instruction. In this way my students can learn to write poetry, learn figurative language and become poets themselves. I would also like to add several other poetry books to my classroom library for the students independent or shared reading in poetry. I would like for each of my students to have a writing journal so that they can create a collection of self authored poems. I too would like for my students to have colored paper so that they can display some of their favorite poems with their classmates and schoolmates.

Your help and support can help make our dream become a reality. My students and I would greatly appreciate your kindness and sharing with us. Our students must learn to write and appreciate poetry.
