My students need 16 new keyboards to replace 6 year old keyboards with keys that stick.

Have you ever had to type anything on a computer using a keyboard with keys that stick because of years of use? How about learning to type using a keyboard like that?

These 16 keyboards will be used for 8 periods per day.

The school is in one of the highest poverty areas in California. The student population is bright and extremely diverse. Many students score "proficient" and "advanced" on state testing. The classroom in question is a computer lab where students learn everything from computer basics, like keyboarding, to video editing and web design.

My Project

My students currently struggle with using the 6 year old computers I have in my computer lab. We are forced to use out of date software- not because the district doesn't have licenses to newer versions- but because the computers just don't support it. A big problem is that the keyboards have seen their share of use for the last 6 years, and many keys "stick" when pressed or can't easily be pressed at all. They are to the point where cleaning does not help and they are at the end of their useful life.

In teaching basic fundamentals about computers, I feel it is important to have the equipment necessary to give students a real sense of what a computer is about.

Having usable keyboards is an important part of that goal.
