Motivating Kids to Read

My students need 15 subscriptions each to 2 editions of Time For Kids Magazine.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Actively and meaningfully involving students in reading is a challenge. Students have to make the choice to engage. When students interact with the text they are reading by making connections, drawing conclusions, and questioning what they read, they become critical thinkers.

My students attend a Title I school in an urban setting.

Many have come to view reading as a task they must 'endure' at school. Many are struggling readers who read below grade level. These students may be turned-off to reading in general because they fell they can't read. Some of their parents are working two jobs just to put food on the table and are too exhausted and stretched too thin to offer the reading support students need. Many of my students do not have a reading role model to encourage them to read at home. As a result of these challenges, students aren't buying in to the fact that reading can be fun and entertaining. Therefore, they aren't reading by choice. Research shows that the less students read, the more challenges they will face as they fall behind their peers who read more words on a regular basis. In essence, they are locked in a downward spiral.

My Project

Time for Kids magazine is a powerful tool for motivating kids to read. Students are drawn to the glossy cover with colorful pictures and before you know it, they are reading to find out what the pictures are all about. Time for Kids is a weekly published magazine that integrates reading and writing with social studies, science and math. The non-fiction articles explore current real world events and cultures around the world. These magazines will enhance the current reading curriculum for my students, providing an opportunity for them to see reading from a different perspective. The magazines will add to my varied approach to teaching reading skills. It's good to change things up and these magazines will allow me to do that. I will bel able to guide students in incorporating reading strategies and they'll be having fun reading about something they are interested in. After reading the magazines in class, they will be able to take them home and share what they've read with their families.

The need to motivate and engage students in reading is crucial and effects every area of their lives now and in the future.

This is an especially pressing need for children in poverty. Getting a child 'hooked' on reading can save their life. As a teacher, it is my job to remove all obstacles and provide every possible advantage for my students to succeed as readers and to become lifelong readers. I appreciate your help in this important endeavor. School budgets have been slashed to the bone.
