Classroom Terrarium for Life Cycle Study

My students need a movable habitat center.

My Students

I'm a second grade teacher in an inner city school with a high population of students in need. We are about 97% free/reduced lunch and have a high population of students who speak English as a second language. I have 24 students in my class and they are bright but they need real world experience.

My students are socio-economically disadvantaged and don't have access to zoos and aquariums.

So, when I teach about life cycles the children have no real world connection with what we are studying. Life science is taught in the spring and without your donations and support my students will have a textbook experience. However, if you support this project my students will actually get to witness the amazing transformations that take place through metamorphosis. I have caterpillars that will turn into butterflies, an anole, crickets, mealworms, and several different plants. With your support, I will be able to create a mini ecosystem in my classroom that my students can observe and document the changes they see taking place daily. This habitat center will allow my students share "their" experience with other classes by just rolling the habitat center into another room. This will create a sense of pride, because my students will be able to "teach" others what they are learning.

My Project

Not only will my students witness metamorphosis in a way that they have never before seen, but they will be able to share the experience with peers(we have three second grade classrooms). This mobile habitat will also allow older and younger students in other classes to observe the miracle of metamorphosis. Right now I have one ten gallon fish tank that I use and try to teach about all the different life cycles. Please support this project, the mobile habitat center I'm requesting will be used for years and will impact the lives of hundreds of students each year (not just my 24 second grade students). It will also be used for several other projects that my students do throughout the year not just the one life cycle unit. I know that you can imagine how wonderful this will be compared to a stationary 10 gallon fish tank. Please help me make science more interesting and donate to this project.

This habitat center will allow my students to really observe life cycles.

By creating a mini ecosystem, the children will have a better understanding of how each creature effects every other creature. This will help them understand major concepts like global warming and the water cycle. Please support this project and show my students that you care about their education too!
