Dressing Up Dramatic Play

My students need costumes, props, and furniture to enhance their dramatic play.

Mrs. Monte PS 160 William Sampson
Brooklyn, NY Grades PreK-2

Have you ever felt like a fish out of water? Well, coming to school for the first time as a three or four-year-old English Language Learner can certainly make you feel that way, especially when you are placed in a classroom with only one or two, if any, children who speak your native tongue, or share your home customs. This is certainly the case in my two Pre-Kindergarten classrooms, where less than 25% of the students are native English speakers. Each day when the children come to school, we look for opportunities to help them discover similarities between themselves and their families. We strive to make this, their first school experience, meaningful and memorable in a warm, welcoming, supportive, and significant way.

One area of the classroom where the children naturally discover ways to communicate about familiar ideas is the dramatic play corner, or what many commonly refer to as the house-keeping or kitchen center. Here children engage in socio-dramatic play around important universal themes such as taking care of baby, cooking dinner, going to the doctor, fixing the broken sink, to name a few. The experiences they encounter here, are both relevant in a real and imagined sense. The children can join together and play about things that make them excited, happy, scared, or confused. Their actions transcend language, and ultimately form memories that they can draw on as they construct their knowledge of how the English language works, how people interact, how stories unfold and are told, and how the world works. Since the nature of play is spontaneous, we want to make sure the children have the costumes, props, and furniture they need to act out their ideas as they develop. Unfortunately, our dramatic play area lacks a sufficient number and variety of these items.

We need materials to enhance our classroom dramatic play. We need a cash register and shopping cart, so we can go to the store and buy the food we need to take care of our family. We need a bed and bedding for our baby doll, who has been sleeping upright in our high chair or on a shelf in the kitchen. We need cleaning utensils to keep our home nice and tidy. And we need some costumes and props to help us explore and define our roles as working members of our fantasy community that we build through our play. While pretending to have all of these things can stretch our imagination, it becomes difficult to share our ideas when we lack a common language with which to communicate those ideas. These few simple objects, that are universal to all cultures, will help us bridge this language gap.

Your help in procuring these tools will help the children gain confidence as they learn to express themselves in meaningful and productive ways. You will ensure that their first school experience is nurturing, supportive, exciting, productive, and meaningful. You will help to provide a strong foundation on which these children can grow as learners and positive members of their school, home, and world communities. Not too bad for a few simple costumes, props, and furniture pieces.
