Beyond Back To School Basics

My students need 11 classroom supplies, including magazine racks, tote boxes, caster kits, 24 dry erase lapboards with markers and erasers.

Greetings! I teach second graders at a Title I school in an urban area of Michigan which has been hit extra hard by economic challenges. 97%-99% of our students receive free or reduced meals due to financial hardship. The school district itself is also facing major debt issues. Still, it's important that our students are given an equal opportunity for a quality education when they walk through our doors. I taught in an affluent suburb for years before coming here and I take pride in knowing that my so-called "disadvantaged kids" are showing the world what they can do. Our school has been recognized as a high-achieving school and as one of the top five Title I schools in the state for improving student achievement. Over the years, I've learned to watch the sales and get the deals for back to school supplies. I've already bought a box of crayons, a bottle of glue, a spiral notebook, and a glue stick for every in-coming student. Thanks to generous donors who gave to previous DonorsChoose.org projects they will also have scissors, paper and other supplies. And they will have personalized pencils (in many different colors) thanks to our pencil project which was funded through DonorsChoose.org donors as well. However, we would be very grateful if donors could help us with some additional, perhaps less traditional items. We use colored paper for a variety of learning activities -- especially flash cards. Donors blessed us with a variety of colored paper this past year and we are still making great use of it. However, it would really help us to have a few more colors. We are also asking for pink erasers, since everyone makes mistakes. I'm requesting a huge class set of markers which we can use as an occasional alternative to crayons. It is simply cost efficient to maintain a class set which can be set aside when not in use. One engaging strategy, (which is also environmentally-minded), is to reduce the amount of daily paper by allowing children to share their answers on dry erase boards. We are seeking a class set of personal boards, along with 'click' dry erase markers, and 3 bottles of cleaner. I have bought labels that range from 80 to 10 per page, but the full sheet labels can be used for so much more -- from creating personalized stickers to adhering full-page sheets to anything. The remaining items are in the name of room organization. I'm very grateful to have so many resources to support learning in our classroom, but it's important to keep them organized and manage the space well. I'm asking for two 30 gallon totes that we can use to store math supplies and caster kits (wheels) that the local hardware store will attach to boards so things can readily be moved to accommodate the needs for the classroom. Finally, I bought a wonderful bookshelf and it's full of books, but we'd like to have them organized on each shelf. I have bought some boxes, but I'm pleased to say we have so many books that we need more boxes! The "bankers boxes" (a.k.a. magazine boxes) make it easy for books to be organized according to their accelerated reading level and for students to choose a book at a level that will challenge but not frustrate them. With your help, my students will not only have the basic supplies, but a variety of materials that lead to exciting days of learning in an organized environment. Thank you for your kind consideration and generous support.
