Physics Video on Demand

My students need a camcorder and memory card so we can record class activities for students who are absent for extended periods of time or need additional tutorials.

As a physics teacher in an inner city school, I have the joy and challenge of teaching a relatively complex subject to a population of students that would probably never experience it at another school. As a result, I work with students from a range of backgrounds and interests, who genuinely reflect the diversity of the city. Physics provides numerous opportunities for hands on, personalized learning in which students can collaborate to develop concepts with guidance from the teacher, rather than being force-fed formulas from a textbook. This can be empowering for students and exposes them to a wide variety of learning experiences.

Because my school offers an alternative approach to learning and uses technology to a considerable extent, we often attract students who have not been as successful as they would like in a more traditional environment. This includes a large number of students with chronic health issues that keep them out of the classroom for days or even weeks at a time, missing valuable class time and opportunities to experience physics up close and personal. For these students, without the wide range of activities, demos, and labs, many subjects (and especially physics) can be reduced to mindless memorization of facts and formulas, which is exactly the opposite of how we approach learning.

By having a full time video camera in the room, we would be able to videotape lessons, group discussions, labs, and demonstrations, and share these with students who miss class on a particular day. Students in class could take segments on as projects, thus enabling them not only to develop and share expertise in a particular area of physics, but also to help out a classmate in need. The video camera would therefore provide a valuable learning resource to students in class as well as those outside of it. In addition, we could save and edit videos for future classes to use as tutorials when students required additional help or exposure to material. All of this will help students of all levels and needs get more out of the class while they are in it and be better prepared for future classes and college.

Your donation would help ensure students with a wide range of needs would be able to succeed in a class that challenges students to rethink their whole view of the world. You would be helping students who need an education tailored to their unique situations achieve up to their potential and thrive in this alternative learning environment.
