Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Literacy, Science, and Social Studies to 6th grade students in the South Bronx. My students generally reach my classroom reading fiction at a 3rd to 4th grade reading level (and reading non-fiction lower than that). What this means in terms of their literacy development is that my students need to READ, READ, READ, so that they can get back on grade level and move beyond.

Budget cuts are all around this year, and it is truly a heartbreaking situation for me and my students. Books that engage all students are essential for their literacy development and success in and out of the classroom.

We need more books! The number one way to raise literacy levels is for students to read books at their reading level. It really is that simple.
