My Library Is a Mess!!!

My students need tote bins to organize books by genre and lexile level in our classroom library. Right now, our library is too hard to navigate! They are all having such a hard time finding books they like due to lack of organization. Also, I am requesting a class set of markers to enhance grammar lessons. This will allow us to take a multisensory grammar approach to teaching which will differentiate instruction to different learning styles.

I am a Teach For America teacher in a high needs middle school. I teach grade seven Reading-English Language Arts.

My students face challenges every day. Many of them cannot read on grade level, and their writing skills are severely lacking. The economic situation in our county is not the best, and because limited supplies are available, I have not been able to accommodate my students in the way I feel they deserve. An intense focus on fostering a love of reading in my students and bringing interest to basic writing skills will prepare them immensely for the future. I tell my students that they are college bound, and in order to meet the goals we have set, they need to start developing these skills now.

The supplies I am requesting will be of such great, inexplicable help to my students. They struggle very much with writing and grammar because they are not state-tested topics; therefore, these skills have been left out of most of their ELA classes for the majority of their schooling. By introducing them to these skills in a multi-sensory fashion using colors for visual learners, students will be able to grasp a topic that has been lacking attention throughout most of their schooling. Similarly, these students are not readers. This, I feel, is because reading has never been presented to them in an appealing way. Right now, my classroom library is contributing to this problem. With the organizational tools requested, my kids would be able to easily find a high-interest book and really develop a love of reading. Right now, I conference with my students about what they are reading independently. I ask them, "Do you like the book?" Many of them respond, "Not really." This tells me that they did not take the time to find a book they like because they view reading as an arbitrary mandate. These supplies will help fix this!

You will be making it possible for my students to develop the skills they need for the future!!!
