I am a fifth grade science teacher in a school which has 100% free/reduced lunch. We are struggling with reduced state funding. I have been working very hard to get students to accept science as a hands on activity. Before I came to this school they had only ever read from a textbook. Since we have moved to an all hands on approach to science my students are waiting to come to my class all day, and are always disappointed when they have to move to their next class.

I love to hear little gasps and ohhs and ahhs when my students first enter my room. I always have some little bits and pieces on their tables. Yesterday they walked in to see wires and lantern batteries and light bulbs on their tables. One student remarked to me without knowing what we were going to do yet, "Oh, this is going to be fun." My challenge is trying to find ways to teach everything in my grade level expectations using a hands on approach. Some things are easier than others. Lack of funding and reduced school budgets have made it impossible to teach certain things without the generosity of people like those which donate to programs like donorschoose.org.

We are about to start learning about ecosystems and how animals and plants interact to keep their ecosystem in balance. I can talk about it, but it will be so much better if my students can see it happening. I would love to have a river tank in my classroom so they could see how fish, amphibians and plants all interact to keep the tank in balance. They can see how the fish waste becomes fertilizer for the plants and how the plants provide an environment for amphibians and insects. In turn the insects will provide food for the amphibians and fish. Not only will the tank be an excellent way to teach about ecosystems it will also provide a soothing presence in the class long after we finish our unit. Students will also be able to take responsibility for some of the care and upkeep of the aquarium. I can see this as a great tool for rewarding children for positive behavior.
