Electric Youth: Electrifying the Science Classroom

My students need supplies to experience electric circuits and magnets hands on -- the only way to truly do science.

Electricity and magnetism cannot merely be read about, it must be seen and experienced by young minds! I teach 7th grade science to truly wonderful young people in a low income community where hands on science supplies are practically nonexistent.

As a second year teacher, I have seen what a difference hands on instruction makes in the classroom. Students are engaged, enjoy the learning process (Yes!) and retain the information significantly better when they are actually doing science. For some of my students, this is the first science instruction they've received in their 7 years of schooling. We have too much instruction to make up to be spending time reading outdated textbooks. Like all children, my students deserve the best science instruction possible, and this means hands on!

To learn simple, series, and parallel circuits, my students need the materials to make these circuits. It is through this experience that they will gain a deeper understanding of the content and truly retain the information. Additionally, many of my students have not experienced the attraction and repulsion of magnets. A magnet kit will allow my students to experience and understand magnetic fields, and the effects of like poles and unlike poles interacting.

Your help will ensure that my students stay engaged, experience what science truly is, and learn the joy of a quality education.
