The 4th Grade Knowledge Explorers want to be able to read books at their own level and read as a class! Please help! We are a 4th grade classroom in a Title-I charter school that serves a mostly low-income and predominately English Language Learner (students for whom English is not their primary language) community.

This is my first year teaching in our school. The 4th grade classroom came with no books for a classroom library or to read as a class. Reading is the highest priorities in our Knowledge Explorer classroom but this is very hard to do if we don’t have any books. I am trying to build a classroom library that not only includes a wide variety of levels and interests, but also one that reflects the demographics of our classroom. Additionally, to ensure that every student feels successful and empowered in their reading abilities, we need sets of leveled reading books so that all the students in my classroom can grasp the 4th grade standards.

I have selected a couple classic books for 4th graders to read as a class. Twenty-five books are enough for a classroom set. We are about to finish There’s A Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom and then will not have any other classroom sets to read. Additionally, our school has no Minnesota history curriculum even though it is a standard that we are required to teach. The Sea-To-Shining Sea Minnesota book is a great classroom resource for teaching Minnesota history.
