The students that I teach come from a high-need community. Most of my students have free or reduced lunch, a number that seems to increase every year.

My students are 13 and 14 year old boys and girls who are reluctant to read the books that are assigned to them. "The Hoopster" is about an African American boy named Andre who faces many of the issues my students face every day, racism. Andre must decide how he can get himself back up in society after being unjustly beaten down without fighting back physically against the group.

My class will need 30 copies of "The Hoopster." This book will have the students, both boys and girls,hooked into reading. The students need to read books that represent their nationality and their lives. When the students read books with characters who represent their lives, they are able to jump into the character and enjoy the books they are reading. What better way to get students to want to read, then to give them books they can relate to.

I have had the opportunity to listen and meet the author at the National Council of Teachers English Conference this past November. He read part of "The Hoopster" to the group and had me hooked. I recently picked up the book and read it in a day, I just could not put it down. This is a book I know my students will enjoy as much as I did and they will try to sneak ahead to find out what happens next. Your help will make it possible for my students to read a book that they will love and to ensure a love of reading.
